What is a pro card?
What does 'earning a pro card' mean?
Bodybuilding news often says that someone 'earned a pro card'. It sounds like a card you keep in a wallet, but it actually refers to a status. This post explains what a pro card is and how people get one.

The right to enter pro contests
A pro card is the status that lets you enter one bodybuilding federation's pro contests. You earn it by placing well at amateur contests. Each federation gives out its own, and the way to earn and keep it differs between federations.

Amateur and pro
Contests are split in two
In the dictionary, an amateur is someone who does something as a hobby, and a pro is someone who does it as a specialty or as a job. Bodybuilding contests are also split into amateur contests and pro contests. Only competitors with a pro card enter pro contests.

The IFBB Pro League pro card
Earned only at 'Pro Qualifier' contests
The pro card of the IFBB Pro League, the body that runs pro contests, is earned only at 'Pro Qualifier' contests. A Pro Qualifier is an amateur contest with pro cards as the prize, run by the US amateur body NPC and by NPC Worldwide, which covers other countries. Ordinary regional amateur contests do not award pro cards.

How many people get one
One winner per division at NPC Worldwide qualifiers
At NPC Worldwide Pro Qualifier contests, only one person per division, the overall winner (1st place in the whole division), receives a pro card. The bigger Amateur Olympia gives up to 3 cards per division when enough competitors enter. So few people receive a pro card.

What comes after earning it
Register, then buy the card
Earning a pro card does not let you enter pro contests right away. In the IFBB Pro League, you must create a member account and get it approved within 1 year, then buy the pro card within another 1 year to become an 'Active' member who can enter pro contests. So a pro card is really closer to a membership you pay to keep.

New every year
Active status ends on December 31 (12/31)
IFBB Pro League Active membership is valid only for the year in which you buy the card. Whenever you bought it, it ends on December 31 (12/31) of that year. So competitors who keep entering pro contests buy the card again every year.

The WNBF pro card
A natural federation gives pro cards too
The WNBF, a natural federation that drug-tests competitors, also gives pro cards at amateur pro qualifier contests. But a winner can register as a pro only after being told that their urine drug test was clean, and must do so within 30 days of that notice. Pro membership lasts 1 year, and must be kept current to keep pro status.

Common misconception
Is a pro card for life once you earn it?
No. In the IFBB Pro League, a pro who has bought a card since 2024 loses pro status if they stay 'Inactive', not buying the card, for 3 years in a row. They then have to earn it again at a Pro Qualifier contest. In the WNBF too, a pro who does not keep their membership current loses pro status.

Summary
The step from amateur to pro
A pro card is the status that lets you enter one federation's pro contests, earned by placing well at amateur Pro Qualifier contests. It is not a one-time prize: it lasts only while you keep up your membership as the federation requires. Related terms: bodybuilding federation, Mr. Olympia, natural bodybuilding.
