Does caffeine gum work faster than coffee?

Short answer

No. Gum was absorbed faster than a pill, but blood caffeine peaked at about 40 minutes with gum and about 38 minutes with coffee, with no difference. Its effect on exercise was also small.

  1. Does caffeine gum work faster than coffee?

'Gum → absorbed in the mouth → works faster' — does this formula hold?

Caffeine gum is said to work fast because caffeine is absorbed through the lining of your mouth while you chew. We compared it with pills and coffee to see how fast it really gets in, and whether it helps exercise.

  2. Faster than a pill

Peak blood level: 44 to 80 minutes with gum, 84 to 120 with pills

84 people took 50, 100 or 200 mg of caffeine as gum or as a pill. Blood caffeine peaked at 44 to 80 minutes with gum and 84 to 120 minutes with pills. The peak level and the total amount absorbed did not differ.

  3. And compared with coffee?

No difference: 40 minutes for gum vs 38 for coffee

16 people took gum and instant coffee, each with about 50 mg of caffeine, on separate occasions. Blood caffeine peaked at about 40 minutes with gum and about 38 minutes with coffee, with no difference. The gum actually released about 18% less caffeine than the coffee.

  4. Does coffee help exercise too?

It cut times as much as a caffeine drink

8 people drank a caffeine drink or instant coffee with the same caffeine (350 mg for a 70 kg (154 lb) person) 1 hour before a cycling time trial. Both were about 5% faster than a fake drink (40.23 min → 38.35 and 38.27 min), with no difference between them.

  5. So what does gum do for exercise?

A small boost, only in endurance and jumping

A 2026 analysis that pooled 25 studies with 390 people found caffeine gum improved performance slightly compared with fake gum. The effect was clearest in endurance exercise, and jumping improved a little. Another analysis of 21 studies also found no difference in muscular endurance (doing many reps).

  6. What made the gum work

How long you chew, and how much

In the 2026 analysis, chewing for 10 minutes worked, while chewing for 5 minutes made no difference. Higher amounts worked better, and how many minutes before exercise people chewed did not change the result. A 2023 analysis found it worked at 210 mg or more for a 70 kg person.

  7. Summary: faster than a pill, as fast as coffee

The formula breaks at the 'faster than coffee' link

Caffeine gum was absorbed faster than a pill, but no differently from coffee. Its effect on exercise was small, showing up with about 10 minutes of chewing and enough caffeine. If you drink coffee, switching to gum will not make it work any faster.
