Does morning exercise burn more fat than evening exercise?

Short answer

No. When studies randomly assigned the time of day, morning and evening exercise made no difference to body weight or body fat. The big morning advantage came from a study where people picked their own time.

  1. Does morning exercise burn more fat than evening exercise?

'Morning workout → more fat burned → more weight lost' — does this formula hold?

A common claim is that exercising in the morning burns more fat, so you lose more weight. We checked whether the time of day you train actually changes body fat.

  2. A study where morning won big

    2% vs 2.1% over 10 months

In a study where people exercised 5 days a week for 10 months, the 21 who trained mostly in the morning lost 7.2% of body weight, and the 25 who trained mostly in the late afternoon lost 2.1%. For an 80 kg (176 lb) person, that is about 5.8 kg versus 1.7 kg.

  3. But people picked their own time

The time of day was not randomly assigned

This result came from sorting people afterwards by the exercise time they chose themselves. This design cannot separate the clock from other differences in people's habits. So we looked separately at studies that assigned the time at random.

  4. When the time is assigned at random

No difference in weight or body fat

A 2026 analysis pooling 19 studies with 765 people found no difference between morning and afternoon/evening exercise in lowering body weight (6 studies) or body fat (7 studies). The weight gap was 0.38 kg, not a statistically meaningful difference.

  5. Same workouts for 16 weeks

Body fat fell 0.7% in both morning and afternoon groups

139 people were split into morning exercise, afternoon exercise, or no exercise, and the exercisers did 48 high-intensity interval sessions over 16 weeks. Both exercise groups lost 0.7% body fat and 2.1 cm of waist, with no difference between them. Morning led only on blood pressure and insulin.

  6. Morning came out ahead in only one study

27 women training for 12 weeks

The result where morning exercise cut more body fat came from 27 women training for 12 weeks (1.0 kg vs 0.3 kg). The 20 men in the same study, and 36 women who trained for 8 weeks in a 2026 study, showed no difference in body fat by time of day.

  7. Summary: morning or evening, fat came off the same

What cut body fat was the exercise, not the clock

When the time was assigned at random, morning and evening made no difference to body weight or body fat. The 10-month study where morning won big sorted people by the time they chose. In the 139-person study, body fat fell in both exercise groups.
