Do you need to load creatine with big doses at the start?

Short answer

No. Loading is just a shortcut that fills your muscles with creatine in 6 days. Taking 3 g a day gets you to the same level in 28 days, and strength gains didn't differ with or without loading.

  1. Do you need to load creatine with big doses at the start?

'20 g a day in week one → faster results' — is it a must?

Many people say to start creatine with a 'loading' week of 20 g a day. We checked whether skipping it means weaker results, looking at creatine levels in muscle and at training outcomes.

  2. Loading is the fast way to fill up

Muscle creatine up 20% in 6 days

In a study of 31 people, taking 20 g a day for 6 days raised muscle creatine by about 20%. After that, just 2 g a day kept it there for 30 days. When they stopped, levels returned to normal within 30 days.

  3. But a small dose gets you to the same place

    3 g a day: the same 20% in 28 days

In the same study, taking 3 g a day with no loading raised muscle creatine by the same 20% or so, just more slowly, over 28 days. The only difference is how fast you get there: 6 days with loading, 4 weeks without.

  4. Strength gains didn't depend on loading

63 studies: no difference with or without it

A 2026 analysis that pooled 63 studies with 1,489 people found creatine plus training increased upper- and lower-body strength and muscle more. But when studies were split into loading plus maintenance versus maintenance only, strength gains didn't differ.

  5. Muscle grew even without loading

    Low-dose-only studies: 1.81 kg

In an analysis of studies of people taking creatine while training, studies that used 5 g a day or less with no loading still showed 1.81 kg more lean mass (muscle and everything except fat) than a dummy pill.

  6. On the flip side, big single doses upset stomachs

    10 g at once: 55.6% had diarrhea

59 people took creatine for 28 days. Among those who took 10 g at once, 55.6% had diarrhea. Those who split the same 10 g into two 5 g doses: 28.6%. Dummy pill: 35.0%. The bigger the dose, as with loading, the easier splitting it is on your stomach.

  7. Bottom line: loading is optional, consistency is key

3 g a day reaches the same level in 4 weeks

Loading is a shortcut that fills your muscles in 6 days, and 3 g a day gets you to the same level in 28 days. If you're not in a rush, 3–5 g every day is enough. Only if you want to fill up fast, 20 g a day split into several doses for 6 days works.
