Short answer
It helps endurance a little. One dose before exercise improved performance by a few percent, and 1 g worked no differently from 6 g. The effect is small enough that short cycling time trials showed no difference, and it worked best together with caffeine.
Does taurine help your workouts?
'Taurine in energy drinks → more power' — is that right?
Taurine is in almost every energy drink. We checked whether taking it before exercise improves performance, by how much, and what it does for strength and recovery.

Endurance performance improved
Pooling 10 studies, it worked
An analysis that pooled 10 studies where people took 1-6 g of taurine once or for up to 2 weeks found endurance performance improved. One dose worked as well as several days, and more did not work better. A 2025 analysis that pooled 23 trials with 308 people also found a small boost from a single dose.

How much better?
12 seconds over 3 km, 2.7 more minutes of cycling in the heat
When 8 people took 1,000 mg and ran 3 km, their time fell from 658.5 to 646.6 seconds — 1.7% faster. When 11 people took an amount equal to 3.5 g for a 70 kg (154 lb) person and cycled in 35-degree heat, the time they lasted before exhaustion rose from 22.43 to 25.16 minutes — 2.7 minutes more.

Short cycling races didn't change
4 km times: 390 vs 388 seconds
When 11 people took 1,000 mg and did a 4 km cycling time trial, they finished in 390 seconds, no different from 388 seconds on placebo. When 11 people took 1.66 g, rode 90 minutes and then raced, times again did not differ; only fat burned rose by 16%. With an effect of a few percent, it did not show up in these tests.

Less muscle soreness
The group that took it for 14 days recovered faster
21 people took taurine or a placebo for 14 days, then did lowering-phase arm exercise until exhaustion. The taurine group had higher strength during recovery and lower soreness and muscle-damage markers. Inflammation markers did not differ.

What about with caffeine?
Taking both together worked best
A 2025 analysis that pooled 12 studies found that taking caffeine and taurine together gave better short, hard-effort capacity and reaction time than either one alone. That is the same pairing found in energy drinks.

Bottom line: it adds a few percent to endurance
1 g was enough, taken 1-2 hours before exercise
One dose of taurine improved endurance performance by a few percent. 1 g worked no differently from 6 g, and the trials took it 1-2 hours before exercise. The effect is small enough that short cycling races showed no difference; soreness was lower, and it worked best with caffeine.
