Does reverse dieting after a show work?

Short answer

The formula that you must add food slowly for your metabolism to recover did not hold. The more people increased their food after a show, the faster their metabolism recovered, and fat came back either way. Experts also chose one big early increase followed by slower gains.

  1. Does reverse dieting after a show work?

'Eat a lot suddenly and fat explodes → add food slowly' — true?

Reverse dieting means adding a little more food each week after a show. The idea is that eating a lot all at once after starving makes fat shoot up, and that slow increases are what bring your metabolism back. We checked whether this formula holds.

  2. First, no trial showed reverse dieting is better

A review of 12 papers found the three approaches had never been compared

A 2022 review of 12 papers on post-show recovery laid out three approaches: increasing slowly, eating freely, and going straight back to maintenance calories. No study had directly compared which one is better.

  3. Metabolism bounced back once food went up

In 15 people, metabolism moved back toward normal 4-6 weeks after the show

Measuring 15 natural bodybuilders around their show, resting metabolism that had dropped before the show rose sharply once they ate more afterward, moving back toward normal. Body weight went from 65.4 kg to 69.3 kg 4-6 weeks later, and fat from 7.7 kg to 10.0 kg.

  4. The bigger the increase, the faster metabolism recovered

But fat went up along with it

A 2026 study that followed 19 people from 21 weeks before a show to 12 weeks after found that those who increased their food more recovered their metabolism faster. Another study of 7 people found that those who gained more fat saw a bigger rise in metabolism. Metabolic recovery and fat gain came together.

  5. At 12 weeks, there was more muscle than before prep

Fat came back to about pre-prep levels

During prep, the same 19 people lost 5.8 kg of fat and 1.7 kg of lean mass (muscle and everything except fat). In the 6 weeks after the show, 3.4 kg of fat and 2.7 kg of lean mass came back. At 12 weeks, fat was about the same as before prep, and lean mass was 1.6 kg higher.

  6. Experts did not pick reverse dieting either

One big increase first, then slow gains

In three rounds of polling 15 bodybuilding and powerlifting coaches and dietitians, reverse dieting was not favored. Most chose a one-time jump in calories right after the show, followed by slower increases. They expected recovery to take 1-6 months, with a 10-15% body weight regain.

  7. Bottom line: 'add food slowly to save your metabolism' was wrong

What restored metabolism was eating more

No trial showed reverse dieting is better, and metabolism came back faster in those who increased their food more. Fat went up either way, but at 12 weeks it was at pre-prep levels and there was more muscle. Experts also chose a big early increase followed by slower gains.
