Do milk and dairy help you lose weight?

Short answer

Not if you simply add it. In an analysis of 2,101 people, eating more dairy made no difference to body weight. Only within a calorie-cut diet, at 2-4 servings a day, did people lose about 0.9 kg more, and in studies that also included strength training even this difference disappeared.

  1. Do milk and dairy help you lose weight?

'Dairy → calcium → fat loss': does this formula hold?

A common claim is that eating lots of milk or yogurt helps you burn fat thanks to the calcium. We checked two cases separately: simply eating more dairy, and eating dairy while dieting.

  2. Does simply eating more help?

No. Across 2,101 people, body weight did not differ

An analysis that pooled 29 trials with 2,101 people found that the group eating more dairy lost only 0.14 kg more, which did not count as a difference. In studies lasting 1 year or longer and in studies without limits on how much people ate, the dairy group actually ended up heavier.

  3. What about calcium pills?

Adding calcium alone left body weight unchanged

An analysis that pooled 41 studies found that 2,711 people taking about 900 mg of extra calcium a day as pills showed no difference in body weight (0.17 kg) or body fat (0.19 kg). The 2,091 people who raised dairy to about 3 servings a day (about 1,300 mg of calcium) did not change their weight either.

  4. It was different when calories were cut

On the same diet, people lost about 0.9 kg more

Pooling studies where people cut calories and ate 2-4 servings of dairy a day (864 people, no strength training), body weight dropped 0.92 kg more and body fat 1.24 kg more (741 people). Studies typically lasted 16 weeks. Another analysis also found 1.29 kg more weight loss in calorie-cut studies. Because 0.9 kg is an average across studies, in a single trial where 49 people all cut 500 kcal for 12 weeks, 3.3 kg versus 2.2 kg did not count as a difference.

  5. Less muscle was lost too

Lean mass (muscle and everything except fat) fell 0.36 kg less

Pooling 661 people who ate dairy while dieting, lean mass dropped 0.36 kg less. The control groups lost 0.56 kg on average, while the dairy groups lost 0.12 kg. This difference was no different between studies with and without strength training.

  6. What if you also lift weights?

In 307 people, the weight and fat differences disappeared

In 6 studies (307 people) that combined a calorie cut with strength training, the dairy and control groups did not differ in body weight (0.36 kg) or body fat (0.09 kg).

  7. With calories unchanged, there was no effect

Refilling the cut 500 kcal with dairy stopped the weight loss

In a 2026 trial comparing 74 people for 12 weeks, the group that cut 500 kcal and ate 1 serving of dairy or less a day lost 0.69 kg. The group that refilled the cut 500 kcal with 3 servings of dairy gained 0.35 kg, and the group that simply added 3 servings to their meals gained 0.14 kg.

  8. Summary: dairy helps only inside a calorie cut

Add it and nothing changes; eat it while cutting calories and you lose a little more

Simply eating more dairy did not lower body weight. Within a calorie-cut diet, 2-4 servings a day led to about 0.9 kg more weight loss and 0.36 kg less loss of lean mass. On a diet that included strength training, there was no difference in body weight.
