Short answer
Yes. Regular exercise, weights or cardio, improves sleep quality. Total sleep time did not rise much, though, and all-out exercise 2 hours before bed delayed and shortened sleep. Finishing 4 hours before bed showed no effect.
Does exercise help you sleep better?
'Tired body → deep sleep' — does this formula hold?
Some people say they crash after a workout; others say evening training keeps them awake. We checked step by step what exercise actually does to sleep.

Does regular exercise improve sleep?
People rated their sleep better
An analysis that pooled 22 trials with 1,806 people found that 2 to 12 months of regular exercise improved sleep-quality scores by 2.19 points and reduced insomnia symptoms and daytime sleepiness. A 2025 analysis of 7,276 people found all 6 types of exercise improved sleep quality.

Do weights work too?
About as well as cardio
A review of 13 studies found that regular strength training improved every aspect of sleep, with the biggest gain in sleep quality. In the 2025 analysis, the effect of strength training was about the same size as cardio.

So do you sleep longer?
Measured by a device, not by much
In the same 22-trial analysis, total sleep time measured by a wrist device did not differ between exercisers and non-exercisers. What rose was the share of time in bed actually spent asleep. An analysis of 66 studies also found a small effect on sleep time and a moderate effect on sleep quality.

Does evening exercise ruin sleep?
No
Pooling 23 studies of a single evening workout, sleep did not get worse, and the share of deep sleep rose by 1.3 percentage points. In 15 studies with 194 people, hard exercise ending 2 to 4 hours before bed did not disrupt night sleep.

But all-out exercise right before bed is different
2 hours before, sleep came 36 minutes later
In wearable data from 14,689 people over 1 year, finishing a maximal workout 2 hours before usual bedtime meant falling asleep 36 minutes later and sleeping 22 minutes less than after light exercise. Exercise ending 4 or more hours before sleep showed no change, whatever the intensity.

Bottom line: regular exercise improves sleep quality
Finish all-out sessions 4 hours before bed
Weights or cardio, regular training improves sleep quality. Sleep time does not jump, but more of your time in bed is spent asleep. Evening workouts are fine; for very hard sessions, finishing 4 hours before bed showed no effect on sleep.
