Short answer
It did not reduce everyday fatigue. In the strictest trial, with 48 people, fatigue was actually worse than with a fake pill. Taken once, 1 hour before exercise, it improved endurance results by around 2% and made exercise feel a little easier.
Does rhodiola reduce fatigue?
'A root that helps you handle stress → less fatigue' — does this hold?
Rhodiola is the root of a plant that grows in cold, high mountains. It is sold as an 'adaptogen' that helps the body cope with stress. We looked separately at everyday fatigue and fatigue during exercise.

Pooling 11 fatigue trials
Every one had design or reporting problems
A review gathered 11 trials of rhodiola for fatigue. 2 of 6 trials on physical fatigue and 3 of 5 on mental fatigue reported a benefit. All 11 had a high risk of bias or poor reporting.

A stricter trial
Fatigue was worse than with a fake pill
48 shift workers took rhodiola or a fake pill every day for 42 days. Their vitality score got 17.3 points worse than the fake-pill group, and their fatigue score on a 10-point scale was 1.9 points higher. Side effects did not differ.

Where a benefit showed up: fatigue syndrome
The fake-pill group also improved a lot
60 people who met the criteria for fatigue syndrome took 576 mg a day or a fake pill for 28 days. Both groups improved in burnout scores and mood, and rhodiola did better on the burnout score and some attention measures. It beat the fake pill only in people tired enough to be diagnosed.

What about fatigue during exercise?
One dose before exercise improved results by around 2%
18 people took one dose 1 hour before a 9.7 km bike time trial, and their time dropped from 25.8 to 25.4 minutes. How hard it felt fell from 6.6 to 6.0 out of 10. In another study, 24 people lasted 17.2 minutes instead of 16.8 before exhaustion.

Does taking it longer help more?
4 weeks of use added nothing
After 12 people took 200 mg every day for 4 weeks, none of the measured results changed. A 2025 analysis that pooled 26 trials with 668 people also found only a small gain in maximal oxygen uptake.

Bottom line: it is not a fatigue cure
One dose before exercise, around 2% better
Every trial claiming less everyday fatigue had design problems, and in the strict 48-person trial fatigue was worse. It beat a fake pill only in 60 people diagnosed with fatigue syndrome. One dose 1 hour before exercise improved endurance results by around 2% and made exercise feel a little easier.
