Short answer
No. After hard exercise, muscle soreness, inflammation and strength recovery showed no difference from a placebo, whether CBD was taken once or for 6 days. Sleep measured by brain waves showed no difference either, and in an analysis of 1,077 people, CBD-only products did not improve sleep quality.
Does CBD help recovery and sleep?
'CBD → less inflammation → better recovery and sleep' — does this formula hold?
CBD, the non-intoxicating compound from cannabis, is sold as oils and capsules that supposedly speed recovery after exercise and help you sleep. We checked studies that compared it with a placebo for recovery, exercise performance and sleep.

Did it reduce muscle soreness?
No difference in soreness or strength after hard exercise
When 13 people took 150 mg of CBD 3 times after a tough arm workout, soreness, arm swelling and strength showed no difference from a placebo. In 24 people who took about 325 mg (based on a 65 kg body weight) 3 times around a leg workout, inflammation, muscle damage and fatigue also showed no difference.

What about taking it for several days?
6 days of daily use left recovery unchanged
17 people trained hard every day for 6 days and took 60 mg of CBD or a placebo after each session. Most measures of strength, jumping, running and inflammation showed no difference from placebo, and the researchers found no clear effect. A 2024 review of 7 studies also found almost no effect on strength or recovery.

Exercise performance?
Neither 50 mg nor 300 mg changed running performance
25 people took 50 mg CBD, 300 mg CBD or a placebo 1 hour 30 minutes before running, in turn. Time to exhaustion, heart rate, how hard it felt and muscle damage markers all showed no difference from placebo. It neither helped nor hurt performance.

What about sleep?
No difference on brain-wave tests or after 12 weeks
26 people took 300 mg of CBD 30 minutes before bed, and 8 hours of sleep were recorded with brain waves: no difference from placebo. In 54 people who took 100 mg a day for 12 weeks, sleep quality on a questionnaire showed no difference from placebo either.

Pooling the studies?
The sleep benefit came from other cannabis compounds, not CBD
A 2025 analysis that pooled 6 trials with 1,077 people found cannabis-compound products as a whole improved sleep quality. But that effect came from products with cannabis compounds other than CBD; CBD-only products showed no difference from placebo.

But products contain other compounds too
Banned compounds showed up in urine after 10 weeks
31 people took a CBD product containing several cannabis compounds, 150 mg a day for 10 weeks. Other cannabis compounds banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (CBG, CBDV) appeared in 42% and 68% of pre-exercise urine samples, rising to 74% and 84% after 90 minutes of exercise. The intoxicating compound THC was not found.

Bottom line: no difference from placebo for recovery or sleep
The formula breaks at the first link
Soreness, inflammation and strength recovery showed no difference from placebo, whether CBD was taken once or for 6 days. Sleep showed no difference on brain-wave tests, and pooled studies found no effect for CBD-only products. If you compete, also weigh that other compounds in these products show up on drug tests.
