Does chromium cut appetite and body fat?

Short answer

Barely. One trial found people ate less, but an analysis pooling 1,316 people found a weight difference of just 0.75 kg. Taken with strength training, it made no difference to muscle or body fat compared with a fake pill.

  1. Does chromium cut appetite and body fat?

'Chromium → blood sugar and appetite control → less body fat' — does this formula hold?

Chromium is a mineral the body uses to handle blood sugar. That is why chromium supplements are sold as a way to curb sweet cravings and lose weight. We checked whether people really ate less, and whether body fat came off.

  2. Did people eat less?

Yes, but body weight did not differ

42 people with frequent carb cravings took 1,000 μg of chromium or a fake pill for 8 weeks. Food intake fell 25% on chromium and 8% on the fake pill, and hunger was lower too. Still, after 8 weeks, body weight showed no clear difference between the two groups.

  3. Pooling many trials, what about weight?

    A 0.75 kg difference across 1,316 people

A 2019 analysis that pooled 21 trials (1,316 people) found that those on chromium lost 0.75 kg more than those on a fake pill. The body fat percentage difference was 0.68 percentage points. The effect showed up mainly in trials of 12 weeks or less. 0.75 kg over 12 weeks is about 60 g a week.

  4. Other analyses found the same size

5 to 1.1 kg, and more chromium did not add more

A 2013 analysis of 11 trials found a 0.50 kg difference. A Cochrane analysis of 6 trials (392 people) found a 1.1 kg difference over 12 to 16 weeks, and raising the daily amount from 200 μg to 1,000 μg did not make the effect bigger.

  5. With strength training?

No difference in muscle or strength

36 people did strength training for 8 weeks while taking one of two forms of chromium or a fake pill. Strength, muscle mass and lean mass (everything except fat) all rose with training, with no difference based on whether they took chromium.

  6. What about people with blood sugar problems?

Even with diabetes, body fat did not change

A 2024 analysis that pooled 14 randomized trials giving chromium to people with diabetes found no difference from a fake pill in body fat, body mass index (BMI) or waist size. Being a blood sugar mineral did not translate into fat loss.

  7. Summary: appetite dropped, but body fat barely moved

The formula breaks at 'less appetite → less body fat'

In one trial chromium cut food intake, but body weight did not differ. Pooling many trials, the difference was 0.5 to 1.1 kg, about 60 g a week. Taken with strength training, it made no difference to muscle or body fat compared with a fake pill.
